Slight subtleties make all the difference with what might look the same, will definitely not work the same, take these two CAMs one marked X the other L, this is for a reason, so you can identify them from one another. Can you see the slight differences highlighted in red?
Each is designed to pull back the latch of a mortise lock if you use the wrong cam with the wrong manufacturer and the latch will either not pull back at all or not far enough causing you to think there’s something wrong with the lock.
